Safeguarding

Safeguarding protects people from harm, abuse and neglect. If your organisation works with children, young people or adults who may be at risk, it is your responsibility to keep them safe.

What is safeguarding?

Safeguarding means protecting people’s health, wellbeing and human rights, so they can live free from harm, abuse and neglect. It covers children and young people and adults who have care and support needs.

It is not only for large charities or services that work with vulnerable people. If you run a community group, youth club, befriending scheme, foodbank or activity session, safeguarding applies to you. This is true whatever your size, and whether your team is paid or volunteers.

Why does it matter for your organisation?

People trust third sector organisations, often at difficult times in their lives. Good safeguarding helps you to:
  • protect the people you support,
  • protect your staff, volunteers and trustees,
  • keep the trust of your community and funders,
  • know what to do when someone raises a concern.
If you are a registered charity, your trustees are responsible for making sure safeguarding is in place. Effective safeguarding usually includes:
  • training for everyone who needs it,
  • a clear safeguarding policy and procedures,
  • a named person who leads on safeguarding,
  • safe recruitment of staff and volunteers,
  • a clear way for people to raise concerns and for you to record them.

Safeguarding Training

Access training courses to help your organisation have effective safeguarding procedures. They support your staff, volunteers and the people you work with. A range of trainers deliver courses, which include:
  • Basic safeguarding
  • Safeguarding policies and procedures
  • Working together to safeguard children and young people, level 1
  • Safeguarding adults, level 2,
  • Safeguarding, level 3,
  • Designated safeguarding lead: children and young people.
