Representation

Ensuring the Leeds Third Sector has a strong, coordinated voice on senior strategic boards and within local health structures.

Our approach

We advocate for a person-centred approach to health and care in Leeds.

We believe that people and communities, and the third sector organisations who support them, should be at the heart of decisions about health and care in the region.

One of the ways we do this is by coordinating a group of representatives ‘reps’ to act on behalf of the third sector in strategic conversations about health and care at city-wide and regional level.

Become a Rep

Being a Third Sector Representative is an exciting personal and professional development opportunity and a rewarding experience.

If you work in the VCSE sector and are passionate about the sector having an equal voice at the table this role is for you. Being in direct contact with other professionals who have a similar drive for improving health outcomes is professionally fulfilling.

Develop your skills and experience by being in these strategic spaces. Learn from fellow senior leaders. Input into health priorities which matter to you, your community, and the third sector at large.

You are welcome to get in touch to discuss your suitability for the role.

Request a Rep

Having a third sector representative at the table is important and offers a unique perspective both on challenges and solutions.

We recognise that it can be difficult to find an appropriate person who can effectively represent the diverse third sector, particularly if you work outside of the sector.

Forum Central provides bespoke support to colleagues across the health and care sector to help identify and recruit third sector reps.

If you require a rep for a board or steering group, please email reps@forumcentral.org.uk to discuss your options, including your reimbursement considerations.

What makes a good Rep

Reps offer a unique insight into health inequalities among different populations in Leeds.

To fulfil the role of a representatives, you will:
  • speak confidently for the sector, without personal or organisational bias,
  • be committed to putting people’s voices at the heart of decision making in Leeds,
  • be committed to reducing health inequalities and improving outcomes for people,
  • understand key concepts, including the wider determinants of health and intersectionality,
  • know the health and care system in Leeds, the strategic context and the issues facing third sector organisations. You will also understand the value of place-based and asset-based approaches,
  • communicate well and be a confident strategic voice for our diverse third sector, willing to challenge constructively and hold the board to account,
  • have experience of contributing to multi-agency meetings,
  • understand how health challenges affect different people in different ways, especially in communities facing the biggest health inequalities, such as those who have poorer health outcomes for a variety of reasons.

Support for the role

All Reps are supported by the Forum Central team. You will be assigned a single key contact who can support you before and after the board meeting.

Reps and Reference group meetings

Reps are invited to attend a monthly online meeting to keep you up-to-date with key messages and developments. This also gives you the chance to provide feedback and get peer support.

This takes place the first Wednesday of every month. An agenda is shared in advance and notes follow.
